Last week I read an interesting article in the Globe and Mail regarding a proposed iron ore mine in northern Baffin Island, and a 149-km railway to a sea port. This proposed mine at Mary River, is about 170 km south of Pond Inlet, a town of 1,300, which we visited last August when our ship, the Clipper Adventurer, docked there for about five hours. How this mine would effect this town and other communities would probably be huge.
This rich iron ore deposit was known by the mining world since the early sixties, but because of the expense, no one imagined that it might one day be mined. With iron ore prices climbing to record levels, suddenly interest in mining the Mary River ore has exploded.
There are now meetings in many villages regarding this project; most worry, for good reason, the impact it would have on the environment, the animals, and the Inuit's way of life. Most the the inhabitants there have never seen a railway, the impact would be incomprehensible.
Anyone interested in reading about this, should search the May 14th Business Section of the Globe and Mail story called 'Arctic Promise.'
Now next Sunday, May 29th, I will be taking part in the 'Artists and Authors in the Park' in the Stittsville Village Square, from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. There will be music and local artists displaying their works of art, books, ceramics, etc. etc. I was there last year with my pottery and book, and enjoyed meeting many artists and folks wandering around. See you there.
